MAJOR EARTHQUAKE NEAR LHASA

6.6 magnitude earthquake struck yesterday afternoon 50 miles west of Lhasa, followed by three more quakes registering up to 5.4 magnitude in less than four hours in the same area. According to party-run media, at least 10 people were killed and hundreds of houses collapsed. None of Lhasa's historic structures were believed to be damaged. Almost all buildings in the town nearest the epicenter have been destroyed.
