GUNUNG MERAPI ERUPTION ALERT
M |
ount Merapi, an active volcano located in Central Java, has been making its presence felt this week. Lava flows are already in evidence, and last night MetroTV reported that villagers on the slopes have overcome their reluctance to evacuate after "hujan batu" -- "rain of rocks." Thatched roofs do not offer much protection from rain of this type. High alert has been in effect for about a week now, but a big eruption seems ready to occur at any time. Monkeys and other animals have been seen evacuating the higher slopes, which will hopefully encourage more of the human residents to follow suit.
MetroTV has had some spectacular footage of the smoking peak, shot from a small aircraft. Here is a clip shot yesterday (realvideo format).
